Parent's Guide to Pack 1199
Once again, thank you for your interest in Cub Scout Pack 1199. The information contained on this page will help you understand our Pack's organization and structure as well as providing you with the information necessary to get you and your Scout up and running.
Unless otherwise indicated, meetings and other events will be held at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church located at 120 East Pleasant Avenue in Maywood. Parking is provided on both the Passaic Street side (upper parking level) and on East Pleasant Avenue (lower parking level). The main entrance to Zion is located on the Passaic Street.
With so much going on, it can be difficult to get in touch with everyone. The preferred method of communication is via e-mail. Please confirm with your Scout's den leader your contact information -- mobile phone and e-mail address.
The Cub Scout Den
Cub Scouts are put into groups called "dens" based on their grade:
Scouts work towards age-appropriate adventures to achieve the rank badge of their den. This goal is accomplished with the help of the Den Leader, family and the Scout Handbook. Our Lion and Tiger dens require one parent present during den meetings. Den meetings are typically held twice a month.
After each adventure, Scouts are presented with a token of their completion. After completing all the required adventures, Scouts are presented with their rank badge.
The Cub Scout Pack
Once a month, all Cub Scout dens come together for a meeting. This is called a Pack meeting. Pack meetings are where Scouts are recognized for their accomplishments. New Scouts and their families are also introduced at the Pack meeting. Family and friends (as well as anyone interested in Scouting) are encouraged to attend.
Special events are also held during Pack meetings. Such special events are:
Lion - Kindergarten
Cub Scout Pack 1199 is a participant of the Lions pilot program of the Boy Scouts of America. Lion Scouts complete "adventures" in the handbook towards their Lion rank patch. Lion Scouts do not wear the Cub Scout uniform but instead wear an official Lion Scout t-shirt and optional cap.
Cub Scout Registration & Dues
Parents interested in registering their child(ren) in Cub Scouts must complete and return a Youth Application. Parents who wish to volunteer as a leader within the Pack must complete the Adult Application. Applications can be picked up at any Pack 1199 event.
Along with your application, please include payment for registration. Pack 1199 collects an annual payment for Scouting which coincides with our recharter schedule beginning in January. Your registration payment may be prorated for the current year depending on when your application has been received.
Our annual fee includes the $24 to the Boy Scouts of America for registration and $5 to the Northern NJ Council for insurance. Pack dues are also included with this price. Funds collected from dues are used to purchase Scout pins, patches, subsidize trips, etc.
Payment can be made by check or cash. Checks should be made payable to "Cub Scout Pack 1199." Please note that registration and dues do not include the cost of the Cub Scout uniform and accessories -- except for our Junior Bobcat den.
The Cub Scout Uniform & Accessories
The Cub Scout uniform, or Class "A", consists of the navy blue uniform shirt, neckerchief, slider and hat. The neckerchief, slider and hat matches your Scout's current den. For example, if your son is in the Tiger (or first grade) den, he wears the tiger hat, orange tiger neckerchief and tiger logo slider. The Cub Scout uniform should also have the following patches sewn on it: American flag, Northern NJ Council patch, BSA world crest and numerical patches with Pack designation -- "1199".
Though not required, the Scout Handbook is recommended.
Junior Bobcats (Kindergarten) will be given a special den t-shirt to wear.
Webelos and Arrow of Light dens (4th & 5th Grade) have the option to wear either the navy or tan uniform shirt.
Cub Scout uniforms can be purchased at the Northern NJ Scout Shop located in Oakland, NJ or at Ramsey Outdoors. Our Pack has started a uniform recycling program, so you may want to check if we have shirts, hats, neckerchiefs, etc available. Please reach out to your den leader for more information on our uniform recycling program.
Unless specified otherwise, the Class "A" uniform is to be worn at ALL Scouting events including den and Pack meetings. If your Scout has a recreation or travel game or practice before a Scout event, he may wear his uniform. Please be sure that proper footwear is worn. No cleats.
